Mountain Tour 2021

Working from the archives of Alpine photographer Heinrich Schildknecht (1874-1959), Sayako Sugawara speculates on the image of the mountain as a metaphor for the journey of life. ‘A large part of the c.300 glass negatives are group portraits of mountain guides and clients, including men wearing moustaches, women in skirts and a child, taken on the highest peak in Austria: the Grossglockner.’ For some works Sugawara concentrates on one single negative, trying to extract beauty and meaning from its imperfections: mould, stains, scratches. For others she reframes sections of the original images, reprocessing and recombining to reveal a new and vital narrative. She plays, for example, with images that feature ropes, an element which has a literal and immediate relation to mountaineering, but which also works as a powerful trope for aspects of our existential condition (the sense of being bound or ‘trapped’). She also observes, interestingly, that it seems that at times these images seem to suspend common-sense expectations with regards to power and privilege, showing worldly, wealthy tourists at the mercy of local and so-considered rustic mountain guides.

A special thanks to the family of Heinrich Schildknecht for their generousity and access to the archive.

The drawings are made exclusively with off-cuts from the book “(Copy) 80. The Schwarze Mönch”. The shop only sells work that fulfills the Land Art Agency’s ecological criteria, supporting environmentally sustainable methods & thinking.

What Will You Remember

So thrilled that the Pink Full Moon from the Pond series is included in this beautiful selection of works alongside other wonderful works on What Will You Remember, an online platform of photography views, reviews and interviews. This Solstice Issue is inspired by the British theologian Thomas Fuller’s (1650) quote, “It is always darkest before the dawn.”

沼シリーズの「桃色の満月」を Solstice (冬至)のテーマでキュレーションされたオンラインマガジン、 What will you rememberに 載せて頂いています。是非ご覧頂けたら嬉しいです。

Little Palms + Big Flowers at Photo London Digital

Photo London 2020

Oct 7th – 18th

A selection from the series Little Palms and Big Flowers is currently on show with the Open Doors Gallery at Photo London Digital.

Little Palms and Big Flowers シリーズは、現在開催中のフォトロンドンデジタルのOpen Doors Galleryのページにて10月18日迄、オンライン展示中です。

The series represents observations of the everyday on my windowsill during lockdown.

Forced to spend a long period of time at home during the Covid-19 lockdown, my attention gradually shifted to my immediate surroundings and the simple rhythm of life.  Noticing the incredible lightshow by the spring sunlight I soon started a simple activity of capturing and playing with the shadows cast by the once familiar objects. Soon the process of capturing the light, the cognitive associations and the resulting images generated became a means for imaginary journeys, to timeless places near and far where the little palms and big flowers of the imagination thrive.
