Photosensitive, an exhibition of cyanotypes, originated from ongoing darkroom explorations and dialogues among staff and students at St Paul’s Girls School.
The show points to the transformative potential of psychological and chemical interactions, to what happens when humans or substances converge beyond linear hierarchal systems. Established artists have been invited to exhibit alongside students and educators, some of whom are accomplished artists themselves. In addition to the showcased artworks, there will be a small program of cyanotype workshops to engage young people in this analogue process, fostering an expanded network and dialogue inspired by the exhibition.
The cyanotype process combines two chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. Through this chemical reaction, a light sensitive solution is made that can be applied to a variety of surfaces, ranging from paper to clay. The method involves creating a print without the use of a camera or a negative; instead, an object is placed directly onto the coated, dry paper and then exposed to sunlight or UV light. The final image is revealed after washing the paper in water, resulting in a white silhouette set against a blue-cyan background. Cyanotypes are unique in that they serve as direct physical records of objects, yet they offer mere traces rather than three-dimensional 'presence,' imbuing them with an elusive and enigmatic quality.
Through this early photographic process, Photosensitive immerses us in the realms of the spectral, the evocative and the forgotten, creating a space for subconscious, liquid or aerial worlds. For some of the artists in the show, the cyan hue conjures up bodies of water, whether it be the ocean (Mina Kim and Nadège Mériau), the river Thames (Tom Norris) or the rain (Sayako Sugawara). For others, cyanotypes evoke the ghostly essence of memories, be they real or imagined, as seen in Helen Barff's fabric works, which pay tribute to the unsung heroines of WWII, Spencer Rise's glimpses into her mother's wardrobe, or Riona Das' Sari, imprinted with photographs of Kolkata and London projected on her body. Sonia Kahn's comic book recollects the original graphic use of cyanotype as blueprint. Meanwhile, Rosa Nguyen and Meera Bahree challenge our expectations of the medium by either submerging their prints in clay (Rosa NGuyen) or applying the photosensitive solution to red fabric, silencing the cyan color in innovative ways.

Beyond Silver
Venue: The Hive, 43-47 Vittoria St, Birmingham, B1 3PE.
Dates:19th January - 06 Feb 2023.
Metals and minerals are of the earth - extracted, purified, dried, cut, mould, extruded, dissolved and filtered. Photographic images are of the earth, they are metals and minerals, polished, coated, sensitised, exposed, developed, washed, fixed, displayed. We rely on the sensitivity of these metals to depict the world around us, the earth that they come from.
Silver has taken a leading role in this history - it is a history of colonisation, extraction, and depiction. From Louis Daguerre’s Daguerreotypes to Henry Fox Talbot’s calotypes in the early 1800s, to today's digital Chromogenic prints - silver is seen as unbeatable when it comes to making a quality, archivable photographic image. However, silver is not the only metal used for image making.
The London Alternative Photography Collective present “Beyond Silver”, an exhibition that explores the relationships between analogue photography and metallurgy. The exhibition will consider the use of silver in photography, as well as shining a light on many of the other metals that are used within photographic image production, in both historical and contemporary practice. In addition to silver, the exhibition will include works which utilise lesser known metals in photography including iron, copper, tin, aluminium, platinum and palladium.

Mon - Wed 20 - 22 June: 10am - 2pm & 5pm - 7pm
After my Solo show at the Gleria F&deO I have been busy working at Bucks New University as part of the AA2A Artist Residency. I have been exploring a box full of used and unwanted metal polishing disks which I came across at the early stage of the residency. By making observations, cyanotype prints and research, my mind has been on different journeys in the process of exploring these objects; from the British Industrial Revolution, canals in Birmingham, to the idea of the deities or spirits of forgotten objects. I have been very fortunate to be able to experiment in depth using the incredible facilities at Bucks New University with the help of great technical staff. Many of the experiments can be found on my IG page.
Three Tigers EP Artwork
Tiger Lies Down
Earlier this year I have worked on the artwork for the Three Tigers EP by composer and musician Kumo. The tracks are based on three different forms in Tai Chi relating to the tigers. See more cover designs, have a listen and download here!
“According the Chinese tradition the year of the tiger began on 1st of February 2022. I was teaching a Tai Chi lesson that night and we celebrated the new year. One student asked what to expect in the year of the tiger and I answered “war”. To my horror it appears I was right. Yet there are many tigers. A tiger is not only an adversary, it can also be a defender. It can be the strength inside you to overcome problems, it can be big, beautiful and calm. These three tracks, named and derived from Tai Chi forms, use ancient Chinese harmony to explore different aspects of the tiger, and our relationship to this magnificent and dangerous beast, that, once respected and understood, can be as powerful a force for peace and reconciliation as a harbinger of war.”
Pink Full Moon in 'England on Fire' by Stephen Ellcock and Mat Osman
I am delighted to share the news that Pink Full Moon is featured alongside many other great artists' work in England On Fire, a beautiful new book by Stephen Ellcock and Mat Osman.
Pink Full Moon is part of the series Pond which explores my ongoing interest in the notion of a “portal”. In this case the pond serves as a portal to access the imaginary and unconscious. The images in the series were shot at the same location over a period of two years on my commute to work. The tranquil atmosphere of this place enticed me to stop and spend a quiet moment each time I passed. To find out more about the series please see here.

Mountain Tour 2021
Working from the archives of Alpine photographer Heinrich Schildknecht (1874-1959), Sayako Sugawara speculates on the image of the mountain as a metaphor for the journey of life. ‘A large part of the c.300 glass negatives are group portraits of mountain guides and clients, including men wearing moustaches, women in skirts and a child, taken on the highest peak in Austria: the Grossglockner.’ For some works Sugawara concentrates on one single negative, trying to extract beauty and meaning from its imperfections: mould, stains, scratches. For others she reframes sections of the original images, reprocessing and recombining to reveal a new and vital narrative. She plays, for example, with images that feature ropes, an element which has a literal and immediate relation to mountaineering, but which also works as a powerful trope for aspects of our existential condition (the sense of being bound or ‘trapped’). She also observes, interestingly, that it seems that at times these images seem to suspend common-sense expectations with regards to power and privilege, showing worldly, wealthy tourists at the mercy of local and so-considered rustic mountain guides.
A special thanks to the family of Heinrich Schildknecht for their generousity and access to the archive.

(Copy) 80. The Schwarze Mönch is a photocopied artist book; a journey through a found set of photographic glass plates.
Tracing the marks left on the glass surfaces over time and delving into the images themselves, the book merges these with new marks collected in the process, the result of mechanical imperfections in the photocopier, dust, or creases and folds on the printed surfaces.
The book travels through emerging landscapes, eventually reaching a strange plateau where the artist finds herself reiterating the processes of the original photographers.
Like the glass plates originally encountered, (Copy) 80. The Schwarze Mönch is an active vessel which carries time, memory and unique projections, continuing to accumulate new traces as it is handled by the viewer.

Little Palms + Big Flowers at Photo London Digital
Photo London 2020
Oct 7th – 18th
A selection from the series Little Palms and Big Flowers is currently on show with the Open Doors Gallery at Photo London Digital.
’Little Palms and Big Flowers’ シリーズは、現在開催中のフォトロンドンデジタルのOpen Doors Galleryのページにて10月18日迄、オンライン展示中です。
The series represents observations of the everyday on my windowsill during lockdown.
Forced to spend a long period of time at home during the Covid-19 lockdown, my attention gradually shifted to my immediate surroundings and the simple rhythm of life. Noticing the incredible lightshow by the spring sunlight I soon started a simple activity of capturing and playing with the shadows cast by the once familiar objects. Soon the process of capturing the light, the cognitive associations and the resulting images generated became a means for imaginary journeys, to timeless places near and far where the little palms and big flowers of the imagination thrive.
